Our co-organizer from Syracuse, Italy: Salvatore Fallica, Impact Hub Syracuse
Why did you apply for SEW?
We apply for SEW to give the business ecosystem of South-Eastern Sicily new tools and motivation to reach the next level. After 2 years of intense work building the local community, we have finally reached a maturity level where a new entrepreneurial generation is raising, social businesses are growing and the impact on the land is measurable. It’s time to flourish and grow!
What is your goal in organizing Startup Europe Week?
The goal in organizing Startup Europe Week in Syracuse is to connect several actors of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and trigger an exponential change. Public and Private sector together join forces to promote and link all high quality initiatives already in place, and offer the local community the best resources available in such a productive time of history.
What would you give to your local community?
Impact Hub Syracuse is the ideal space to gather innovators and enable connections, growth and change. We will show participants the benefits of working in a community of peers, sharing spaces resources and projects. We will promote local financial instruments to support the growth of startups and social businesses. Local experts will be invited to join the initiative, both from private and public sector, in order to provide relevant insight and guidance regarding crucial themes such as fundraising, access to finance and European grants. Successful and ongoing UE funded projects will be presented to the community, as best practices and as opportunities to join. Finally, a cheerful networking cocktail session, to stimulate the debate further. SEW event will be a World Cafe to spread the core mission of Impact Hub Syracuse: empower a new generation of Mediterranean Changemakers!
What do you think your area need in order to be a Startup friendly zone?
South-Eastern Sicily is growing fast out of the creative sparkle and resilience of its inhabitants. It’s time to consolidate Public-Private Partnerships and join forces to avoid fragmentation of good initiatives. Connect to multiply impact. The ecosystem is raising, ‘social innovation’ is the word: it’s time for the area to attract resources and investments to grow and scale, aided by powerful institutions who can administer and control effectively, to avoid the mistakes of the past.
What could Startup Europe and European Union do more about developing Startup ecosystem?
Startup Europe and the Union could help the ecosystem by identifying local champions and key figures of growth and development, to be more in contact with the real needs of the local ecosystem. Resources and bureaucracy are not the only solution to problems: it’s all about people.
